Do I need an EIN to Open a Business Bank Account?
In most cases, you will be required to have an EIN to open a business bank account. A business needs an EIN to file tax returns and pay employees.
Partnerships, LLCs, Corporations, S Corporations and Non-profits must obtain an EIN to do business and open a business bank account.
The only business type that does not require an EIN to open a business bank account is a Sole Proprietorship.
If you are a Sole Proprietorship and do not have any employees, you can open a business bank account with just a Social Security number.
To open a business bank account, you need the following information:
- Employer Identification Number (EIN) for all business entity types, or a Social Security Number if you are a Sole proprietorship
- Business formation documents or Articles of Organization
- Ownership agreements if applicable
- Business license(s) – federal and local business licenses and permits
